2 Weeks in Sri Lanka: 14 Day Itinerary & Tours

Two weeks is enough to see Sri Lanka properly rather than efficiently. The classic circuit takes ten days at a comfortable pace, which means a fortnight buys you an entire additional region — the east coast, Jaffna and the north, or Sinharaja and the deep south-west — or the freedom to stay three or four nights somewhere and stop moving altogether.

The strongest fourteen-day routes add rather than stretch. A common shape is the standard loop through the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the hill country, then instead of finishing on the south coast, crossing to Trincomalee and Pasikuda on the east — a coastline most visitors never see, with better snorkelling and a fraction of the crowds. Another is to keep the south but add Sinharaja rainforest and several nights at Tangalle.

Two weeks also makes the northern route viable. Jaffna and the Jaffna peninsula are culturally distinct from the rest of the island — Tamil, Hindu, with its own food, its own islands and a recent history that is worth understanding. It needs three or four days to be worth the drive, which is exactly what a fortnight has spare.

Practically, the thing a fortnight most improves is the pace. On a two-week itinerary you can build in two or three days with nothing scheduled at all, and those tend to be the days people describe afterwards as the best part of the trip.

A Suggested 2 Weeks Sri Lanka Itinerary

One way to shape the trip. Everything below is adjustable — treat it as a starting point rather than a fixed schedule.

  1. Days 1–2

Arrive Colombo and Negombo, then north to Anuradhapura for the ancient capital.

  2. Days 3–4

Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and an elephant safari at Minneriya; village experience at Habarana.

  3. Days 5–6

Kandy — Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, botanical gardens, a Kandyan dance performance.

  4. Days 7–8

Train into the hill country. Nuwara Eliya, tea estates, Horton Plains and World's End.

  5. Day 9

Ella — Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ravana Falls.

  6. Day 10

South to Yala or Udawalawe for a full-day jeep safari.

  7. Days 11–12

South coast: Tangalle and Mirissa, whale watching in season, Galle Fort.

  8. Days 13–14

Sinharaja rainforest or extra nights on the coast, then transfer to the airport.

2 Weeks in Sri Lanka: Common Questions

Is 2 weeks too long for Sri Lanka?

No — the island supports a fortnight easily. Ten days covers the classic circuit, so two weeks lets you add a whole region: the east coast, the north around Jaffna, or Sinharaja rainforest and the deep south. It also lets you stop moving for three or four nights, which a shorter trip cannot.

What should I add to a 14 day Sri Lanka itinerary?

The east coast at Trincomalee and Pasikuda is the most popular addition, especially between May and September when the south-west is wet. Jaffna and the northern peninsula are the most interesting if you have travelled in Sri Lanka before. Sinharaja rainforest suits anyone with an interest in birds or wildlife.

Can I see both coasts of Sri Lanka in 2 weeks?

Yes, though one of them will be out of season — the monsoons hit the two coasts at opposite times. In practice we build the itinerary around whichever coast is in season for your dates and treat the other as a short stop rather than a beach stay. Two weeks is enough to do that comfortably.
