Sri Lanka Heritage Tours & UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Sri Lanka holds eight UNESCO World Heritage sites across an island you can drive across in a day. Six are cultural: the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the rock fortress of Sigiriya, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, the sacred city of Kandy, and the old Dutch fortifications at Galle. The other two — Sinharaja rainforest and the Central Highlands — are natural. Few countries put that much history within so short a drive.

A heritage itinerary here spans an unusually wide sweep of time. Anuradhapura's stupas were among the tallest structures in the ancient world, rivalled only by the pyramids at Giza. Polonnaruwa's Gal Vihara Buddhas were carved from a single granite face in the twelfth century. Galle Fort is a working town inside Portuguese and Dutch walls, with Dutch Reformed churches, mosques, warehouses and merchant houses still standing and still occupied.

The colonial layer is easy to miss and worth seeking out. The Dutch canal network around Negombo, the British-built hill railway to Ella, the tea estate architecture around Nuwara Eliya and the Kandyan-era temples with their painted wooden ceilings all sit within reach of the standard route.

These itineraries pair the major sites with the smaller ones that rarely appear in a fortnight's package — Ritigala's forest monastery, Mihintale where Buddhism arrived on the island, the Yapahuwa rock citadel. A licensed guide travels with you throughout.

Heritage & History: Common Questions

How many UNESCO World Heritage sites does Sri Lanka have?

Eight — six cultural and two natural. The cultural sites are the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya rock fortress, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, the sacred city of Kandy and the old town of Galle with its fortifications. The natural sites are Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Central Highlands.

Can you visit all the UNESCO sites in Sri Lanka on one trip?

Yes, though it needs about twelve to fourteen days to do properly rather than as a checklist. The six cultural sites can be covered comfortably in seven to eight days; adding Sinharaja and the Central Highlands requires a few more, since both are in the south-west and hill country respectively.

Is Galle Fort worth visiting?

Yes. It is a living town rather than a ruin — the Dutch ramparts enclose working streets, cafés, churches, a mosque and merchant houses that people still live in. It is best walked in the late afternoon and evening when the day-trip coaches have left and the ramparts catch the sunset.
