Classic Sri Lanka Tours: Best of the Island

If it is your first time in Sri Lanka, this is the shape the trip usually takes: the Cultural Triangle for the ancient cities and Sigiriya, Kandy for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the hill country for tea and the train, a national park for a safari, and the coast to finish. It is the standard circuit because it works — the geography is a loop, so you are not doubling back, and it takes in the four things the island is actually famous for.

Ten days does it comfortably. Seven is tight but achievable if you accept one region gets a single night. Fourteen lets you slow down, add the east coast, or spend real time somewhere instead of moving every second day. Our classic itineraries come in all three lengths and every one of them can be lengthened, shortened or reordered.

The circuit runs anticlockwise from the airport: north to Sigiriya and Dambulla, across to Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura, south to Kandy, up into the tea hills for Nuwara Eliya and Ella, down to Yala or Udawalawe for the safari, then west along the south coast through Tangalle, Mirissa and Galle back towards Colombo. Every leg is a few hours at most.

You travel privately throughout with your own vehicle and chauffeur-guide, so the itinerary is a plan rather than a timetable. If you want an extra night somewhere because it turned out to be the best place on the trip, that is usually arrangeable while you are on the road.

Classic Tours: Common Questions

What is the classic Sri Lanka itinerary?

The standard circuit runs anticlockwise from Colombo: the Cultural Triangle for Sigiriya, Dambulla and one of the ancient capitals; Kandy for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic; the hill country for tea estates and the train to Ella; a safari at Yala or Udawalawe; and the south coast for beaches, finishing at Galle.

How many days do you need to see Sri Lanka properly?

Ten days covers the classic circuit comfortably. Seven works if you accept one or two single-night stops. Fourteen is where the trip stops feeling like a circuit — you can add the east coast, spend three nights somewhere you like, or take in Sinharaja and Jaffna.

Is it better to hire a car and driver or self-drive?

A car with a driver, in almost every case. Driving conditions take real acclimatisation, road signage is inconsistent outside the main routes, and the cost difference is small because labour is inexpensive. A chauffeur-guide also handles parking, entrance formalities and finding the good lunch stop.
