Hiking is the strongest suit. Adam's Peak is the classic — a night ascent by lamplight up several thousand steps, timed to reach the summit for sunrise and the mountain's famous triangular shadow, walked by pilgrims of four religions between December and May. The Knuckles Range offers proper multi-day trekking through cloud forest and terraced villages. Horton Plains ends at World's End, a sheer eight-hundred-metre drop that clouds over by mid-morning, so it is an early start or nothing. Around Ella, Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock are half-day walks with disproportionate views.
On the water, Kitulgala on the Kelani river is the rafting centre and also does canyoning and jungle trekking. Arugam Bay is the surf hub from May to September, with Weligama on the south coast running the opposite season and a gentler break for learners. Diving is best at Trincomalee and around the Great Basses wrecks in the south.
All of it is arranged with licensed operators and proper equipment. We will also tell you honestly when a hike is harder than the brochures suggest — Adam's Peak in particular is a serious night's climbing, not a stroll.
