7 Day Sri Lanka Itinerary: One Week on the Island

One week is the most commonly booked length for Sri Lanka, and it is the shortest trip that can honestly claim to cover the island. Seven days gets you the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country and either a safari or the coast — the four things the island is known for — provided you accept that one or two of the stops will be a single night.

The route is a loop, which is the reason it works. From the airport you go north to Sigiriya and Dambulla, east or west to one of the ancient capitals, south to Kandy, up into the tea hills for Nuwara Eliya and Ella, then down to Yala or Udawalawe for a safari and west along the south coast back towards Colombo. You never backtrack, and no single leg is more than about four hours.

The Kandy to Ella train is worth building into a seven-day trip even though it costs you flexibility. It is one of the great rail journeys, the scenery through the tea estates is the best on the island, and we arrange for your vehicle to meet you at the far end so you lose nothing.

If you want beaches as well as everything above, eight days is a materially better trip than seven — the extra night is what turns the coastal leg from a stopover into a rest. If your flights allow the extra day at all, look at the eight-day itineraries before you settle on seven.

7 Days in Sri Lanka: Common Questions

Is 7 days enough to see Sri Lanka?

Yes, for a first visit. Seven days covers the classic loop — Cultural Triangle, Kandy, hill country and a safari or the coast — because the geography is compact and the route does not double back. You will be moving most days, and one or two stops will be a single night, but nothing important gets cut.

What is the best 7 day Sri Lanka itinerary?

The anticlockwise loop: two nights in the Cultural Triangle for Sigiriya, Dambulla and an ancient capital; one night in Kandy; the train to Ella and a night or two in the hill country; a safari at Yala or Udawalawe; then the south coast and Galle before flying out. Every leg is under about four hours.

Should I take the train from Kandy to Ella?

Yes — it is the single most scenic stretch of the trip and one of the world's great rail journeys. Reserved observation seats sell out well in advance, so it needs booking early. We reserve the seats and have your vehicle meet you at Ella, so you get the journey without losing your luggage or your driver.
