The central highlands are where Sri Lanka stops feeling tropical. Above about twelve hundred metres the heat drops away, the hills turn into a grid of tea, and mornings arrive with mist sitting in the valleys. It is a completely different island from the coast, an hour or two's drive inland, and most people who come for beaches and heritage end up saying the hill country was the part they would go back for.

The tea landscape is entirely man-made and still working. Estates around Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and Ella are picked daily, and a factory visit — the withering lofts, the rolling, the grading tables — is genuinely interesting rather than a staged demonstration. Lipton's Seat above Haputale is the view Thomas Lipton used to survey his holdings, and it is best at dawn before the cloud closes in.

The Kandy to Ella train earns its reputation. The stretch between Nanu Oya and Ella runs for hours through tea gardens and past waterfalls, and it costs almost nothing. We reserve seats where possible and have your vehicle meet you at the other end, so you get the journey without the logistics.

For genuine wilderness, Sinharaja is the last substantial tract of primary lowland rainforest on the island and a UNESCO site, with a high proportion of endemic birds, amphibians and trees. Horton Plains, up on the plateau, is montane grassland and cloud forest, and the walk out to World's End needs an early start before the view fills with cloud.

Nature & Hills: Common Questions

Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it?

Yes — it is widely considered one of the world's great rail journeys, running for several hours through tea estates, tunnels and hill villages. The Nanu Oya to Ella stretch is the most scenic if you are short on time. Reserved observation seats sell out well in advance, so book early; we arrange this and have your vehicle meet you at the destination.

How cold does the hill country get?

Nuwara Eliya sits at around 1,900 metres and drops to roughly 10–15°C at night, occasionally lower, and it can be genuinely cold in the early morning at Horton Plains. Bring a warm layer — most visitors arriving from the coast underestimate this. Days are mild rather than hot.

What is the best place to see rainforest in Sri Lanka?

Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the south-west and the largest remaining stretch of primary lowland rainforest on the island. It is exceptional for endemic birds and best walked with a specialist guide. Kitulgala and the Knuckles Range offer accessible forest walking on the way between other regions.
