Where you spend it depends on what you came for. Most people put it at the end, on the south coast, which turns the final leg from a two-hour stop into two nights at Mirissa or Tangalle and means you fly home rested rather than straight off a long drive. The alternative is a second night in the hill country, which buys you Horton Plains and World's End at dawn — a half-day walk that does not fit into a seven-day route at all.

Eight days is also the shortest length at which a two-centre trip works properly. Honeymoon itineraries tend to use it exactly this way: five days touring the Cultural Triangle and the hills, then three nights in one place on the coast without moving again. The same shape suits anyone pairing a safari-heavy first half with a beach or Ayurveda second half.

One practical note: count the arrival day as half a day at best. Most of the eight-day itineraries below assume a night at Negombo near the airport, which costs nothing in sightseeing and saves a tired four-hour drive north on the evening you land.
